What are Brownfields?

Brownfields are real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of hazardous substances, pollutants, contaminants, controlled substances, petroleum or petroleum products, or is mine-scarred land. (CERCLA 101-39)

Resources are available at the state and federal level to assist with the cleanup of brownfield sites. There are also a number of laws related to brownfields, including those at the state level that help to determine cleanup liability. See the resources at right for additional information.
