The name "Acushnet" comes from the Wampanoag “Cushnea,” meaning "peaceful resting place near water."
And Acushnet is peaceful! It’s a residential community with a rural feel; it features miles of winding, scenic country roads; and it’s the only community in the SRPEDD region without a traffic signal! The Sawmill on the Acushnet River, part of the Acushnet River Reserve, is a 19-acre former lumber yard where you can now walk, fish, canoe, or look for birds and wildlife common to the SouthCoast and Buzzards Bay.
