Once known as the "Spindle City" (due to its history of cloth production that is still visible in the city’s numerous, architecturally significant textile mills), Fall River boasts a rich culture. It houses the Battleship Cove & Maritime Museum, featuring the world's largest collection of World War II naval vessels (including the battleship USS Massachusetts). The Columbia Street Cultural District or “Little Portugal” offers shops, markets, restaurants, and bakeries that celebrate and display the city’s Portuguese heritage. The city is also home to the Fall River Historical Society & Museum and the Lizzie Borden House bed-and-breakfast and museum. And the Narrows Center for the Arts features art and musical performances throughout the year.
