Project Background
In the 27 communities of Southeastern Massachusetts, no other population is projected to experience as much growth in the next decades as people over 65 years of age. This will require our communities to adapt to changing needs in mobility, transportation access, and other facets of everyday life. SRPEDD is responding to older adult needs identified in previous projects and collaborating with local partners across the region to develop a Regional Age-Friendly Plan.
Age-Friendly Mobility - Southeast Mass is a regional effort to identify needs and action items, set priorities, and support municipal action toward making local changes that improve livability, accessibility, and inclusivity of transportation for people of all ages, with a focus on helping older people live well.
- This Plan will serve as a roadmap to guide future technical assistance, funding, policy, and planning decisions in the region that improve quality of life for residents of all ages.
- The Plan will focus on top areas for improvements and recommendations in transportation and mobility infrastructure and will also draw connections to housing, food access, and open spaces.
SRPEDD is a regional resource for local change. As a planning agency serving 27 cities and towns, SRPEDD assists local governments by connecting the dots between community needs and the funding, outreach, and planning resources that can address them.
- From securing funding to facilitating public engagement, SRPEDD supports cities and towns toward building stronger, more resilient, and more age-friendly places to live.
- As the federally designated planning staff to the Southeastern Massachusetts Metropolitan Planning Organization (SMMPO), SRPEDD is uniquely positioned to lead this age-friendly planning work.
- In addition to coordinating with our cities and towns, we partner with GATRA and SRTA to ensure that transportation systems serve all users — including older adults, people with disabilities, and underserved populations.
Through detailed data analysis — including spatial, demographic, and public input — we are identifying trends and gaps. Our action planning will recommend specific, achievable steps for improving transportation, mobility, and livability in the Southeast Massachusetts region—for older adults and people of all ages.
