Advancing safe, efficient, and accessible mobility for all users across the Southeastern Massachusetts transportation network.

SRPEDD's Transportation Department works closely with our partners and the public in pursuit of a transportation network that serves all users.

As staff to the federally-designated Southeastern Massachusetts Metropolitan Planning Organization (SMMPO) the transportation department is responsible for the planning and programming of all modes of transportation including highways, public transit, freight, bicycles & pedestrians. SRPEDD also provides technical assistance to the 27 communities in the Southeastern Massachusetts region and two transit authorities, the Greater Attleboro Taunton Regional Transit Authority (GATRA) and the Southeastern Regional Transit Authority (SRTA).

We use a data driven and community focused approach to assist our communities with meeting their transportation needs and expanding transportation options in a safe and equitable manner. Our expansive public engagement and community outreach efforts strive to provide a voice in the transportation planning process for vulnerable and traditionally underserved populations.

Active Transportation Planning

Our Active Transportation Planning Program assists communities and stakeholders with making connections for active modes of transportation such as walking and bicycling. Check out our Regional Bicycle Plan, Regional Pedestrian Plan, Bicycle Network Map, Bicycle and Pedestrian Count Program, and Trails Mapping Program.

Safety Program

Our Safety Program uses data driven methods to identify problem areas along our regions roadways and to come up with innovative solutions to address those problems, while keeping the specific needs of our communities in mind.

Transit Planning

SRPEDD provides technical assistance to communities and the Region's two transit authorities, the Greater Attleboro Taunton Regional Transit Authority (GATRA) and the Southeastern Regional Transit Authority (SRTA) through our Public Transit Program.

Public Health and Transportation Planning

The intersection between public health and transportation is becoming increasingly important in transportation planning. We strive to consider the impacts of transportation decision making on public health in our planning efforts.

Integrated Management Systems

SRPEDD's ongoing Integrated Management Systems Program analyzes the current and future traffic operations throughout the region and includes Regional Modeling, Congestion Mitigation and Freight Planning.

Zero Emission Vehicle Planning

SRPEDD is actively planning for Zero Emission Vehicles and infrastructure through our Regional Transportation Plan and other planning efforts.

Traffic Counting and Field Work

Effective transportation planning requires accurate and timely data. SRPEDD's Traffic Count Program uses Jamar Automated Traffic Recorders (ATRs) to obtain traffic volume, speed and classification data on roads and Trafx Automated Counters to record bicycle and pedestrian volumes on paths and sidewalks. Turning movement volume counts (TMCs) are also collected for all signalized intersections in the region. This data is used to update SRPEDD's Signalized Intersection Database.

SRPEDD's Pavement Management Program collects pavement condition data for all local jurisdiction federal aid roadways on a rotating basis.

Regional Transportation Plan

Learn more about our Regional Transportation Plan (RTP); a needs assessment of our transportation infrastructure, including the associated costs to maintain this system into the future. 

Transportation Improvement Program

Learn about the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP); a five-year programming document that lists all the all federally-funded road and bridge projects in the region and all transit projects for both the GATRA and SRTA over five years, it is updated annually.

Unified Planning Work Program

Public Participation Plan and Title VI

The goal of the PPP is to ensure that all persons, regardless of race, color, national origin, age, gender, gender identity or expression, disability, religion, ancestry or ethnicity, sexual orientation or veteran’s status have an equal opportunity to participate in the SMMPO’s decision-making process.

Coordinated Human Services Transportation Plan

Our CHST Plan outlines the needs of seniors, persons with a disability, and low income individuals. The document is used by MassDOT to identify eligible projects for Federal 5310 funding.

Performance Measurement

SRPEDD, as staff to the SMMPO, reports on progress towards meeting goals in key areas such as safety, infrastructure condition, congestion, system reliability, emissions and freight movement.
